"The youth of today are not permitted to approach the traditional heritage of mankind through the door of technological awareness. This only possible door for them is slammed in the their faces by a rear-view mirror society." --Marshall McLuhan, "The Medium is the Massage: An Inventory of Effects" 1967.
Twenty-five years later, we are having the same conversation. The baby boomers McLuhan coached to appreciate television, film and other mass media forms of popular culture have turned to hand-wringing as their children began to consume rap music, the Internet and video games. I have no doubt that the millennial generation will find new things to fret about in their adult years. But video games wont be one of those things. Video games will be a part of their metaphysic, epistemology, aesthetics and ethics. Weaned on the interactive bitstream, these kids will rule the world with a different mindset. For better or for worse.
